Shiso has a bold herbaceous flavor--it reminds me of mint, citrus, basil, and a hint of spice all in one.
Shiso is used in many Japanese recipes. It's also delicious julienned into salads. I really love it in pesto! instead of basil!
Frankie's Shiso Pesto:
Fresh Shiso
Pickled Ginger
Peanut Oil (or neutral flavored oil of your choice if you're avoiding peanuts)
Toasted almonds
Umeboshi Plums
I use this pesto on pasta salads, as a dip for fresh veggies, etc!
